COVID-19: SPCL Update

5th April 2020
By Adam Smith

Following the most recent committee meeting, please see the latest update below with regards to how the SPCL plan to administer the 2020 season as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

We hope that clubs have taken the time to read the recent note from the ECB regarding grants and loans and as Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues, we would also like to share with you the latest League updates.

2020 Season:

It has been agreed that unless the season begins by 4th June, then there will be no promotions or relegations. However, we would like any matches that do take place, to be played in as competitive a spirit as possible and we will be introducing a League cup per division.

It has also been decided that the only format for this reduced season will be limited over only.

With the economic difficulties that this situation may cause, the League will be delaying the invoicing of clubs until the end of the season and will charge for the umpire and balls on a pro-rata basis.

Development Fund:

For the 2020 season only, we have decided to relax the rules to access to the development fund. For those clubs with monies in the fund, should you wish to withdraw your funds, please contact me.

To reduce the costs to our member clubs, we have decided that we will not be producing a physical handbook for this season and will be looking at a ‘special addition’ for 2021. We will be adding a PDF format to website for people to download should they wish.

T20 Cup & Plate Competition:

We are keen to run a version of the T20 competition, but it does look unlikely that we will have access to the Ageas Bowl this season.

We would also like to thank all of you for your patience during this unprecedented time and send our best wishes to all the players and volunteers in all of our clubs.
